Old Town
Geographically speaking, Croatia is a small country, however its history is long and it is rich in natural beauties. Dubrovnik is situated in the extreme south of the country. It is a city of exceptional history, famous for its cultural heritage (it is on the UNESCO's World Heritage List) and it is one of the most attactive and most famous places in the Mediterranean.
The old city walls surround the complex of public and private buildings from all the periods of the city's history since its foundation in the 7th century. There are some city sights of special importance like Stradun – the main street, Knežev dvor (the 'Count's Palace)', Crkva Svetog Vlaha (St. Vlaho Church), the Cathedral, the three old monasteries, zgrada Carine (the Customs building) and Vijećnica (the City Hall). From the sea side, Dubrovnik is surrounded by a group of islands called the Elafiti (Šipan, Lopud, Koločep, Tajan, Olipa, Jakljan and Daksa) and an island Lokrum.
It is a place of rich cultural and artistic life. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival has become a tradition (it was inaugurated in 1950) and is one of the most important events of the year (starts on July 10, and ends on August 25). If you plan your visit in summer, don't miss it.
